  49.     Installation of AppControl
  50.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  51.     if you received this version of AppControl in a self-extracting
  52.     ZIP file (for example, APPCTRL2.EXE), you can install it as
  53.     follows:  activate the Program Manager, select Run from the
  54.     File menu, type the full name of the file (for example,
  55.     C:\DOWNLOAD\APPCTRL2.EXE), press the Enter key, and follow the
  56.     prompts.  When the SETUP program completes you can delete the
  57.     AppControl files in your temporary directory.

  59.     If you received this version of AppControl in a ZIP file, first
  60.     extract the files to a blank floppy, then activate the Program
  61.     Manager, select Run from the File menu, type A:SETUP-AC, press
  62.     the Enter key, and follow the prompts.

  64.     That's all You need to do for installation. AppControl 
  65.     is now ready to use.

  68.     What is AppControl ?
  69.     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  70.     AppControl is an uninstaller for Windows. But not one of the usual 
  71.     types of deinstallation utilities, which often delete files in the 
  72.     uninstall- process, that may be used by several applications, just 
  73.     because they did not check cross-links between files.
  74.  
  75.     The old Windows-problem is:
  76.  
  77.     "How can one track installations and make save deinstallations?"
  78.  
  79.     The new answer to this question is AppControl. It will be Your 
  80.     "installation eye" and "bugbuster". AppControl surveys every 
  81.     installation of Windows software, searches for cross links between files, 
  82.     catalogues them and makes the deinstallations, if You decide so.
  83.     The "Safe Check" software technology is exclusively used in AppControl.

  85.     The way AppControl works

  87.     When You want to keep control of what an installation procedure is doing 
  88.     to Your Windows - directories, you must keep an eye on:

  90.     - created files and directories
  91.     - modifications in "win.ini" and "system.ini"
  92.     - created groups and icons in Windows' program-manager
  93.  
  94.     and that's exactly, what AppControl does for You. It logs any of
  95.     these modifications for preparing a clean removing of the according 
  96.     application.

  98.     But AppControl does even more ...
  99.  
  100.     "Safe Check" investigates all of Your drives (even network drives), 
  101.     searches for certain Windows - files and cross-checks them for 
  102.     connections between them and applications in Your system. These 
  103.     connections then are being logged into the "Safe Check" - database for 
  104.     further use.
  105.  
  106.     These checked file types are: DLLs, EXE-files and VBX-files.
  107.     Files of that type, which are not EXCLUSIVELY used by an application You 
  108.     want to uninstall, will NOT be deleted by AppControl.
  109.    
  110.     To increase the uninstall safety even more, AppControl cross-checks 
  111.     the application-database for files which are being used by several 
  112.     applications and prevents the deletion of these critical files.
  113.  
  114.     That's what lifts AppControl above other deinstallation tools. It 
  115.     does not only clean up Your Windows system, it SAFELY cleans up Your 
  116.     system, even if the installation program is DOS-based.
  117.  
  118.     Words are spelled easy, but only the practice proofs the promises.
  119.     We recommend to test the reliability of AppControl. That's the best 
  120.     promotion, because AppControl proofs itself to be one of the best.
